Poor speed and connection performance

My interent package is set for up to 50 Mbps download. Using the cox internet tools > Speed test it rates at 21. This absolutely **. I frequently have lag issues on games. My connections also frequently drop, like daily. Anyway to make this better and get the service Im paying for?

Intermittent Lag/Disconnects Motorola SBG6850

While I'm gaming, I notice very frequent lag spikes lasting for about 5 seconds at a time. They occur about every minute or two, making my internet nearly useless. I have preferred internet, and I am only using this connection on this internet. My computer is running no other internet applications.
