What's with the Back To Zero Problem?

I've seen multiple other people complain about this issue, so I know this isn't on my end. It's a problem so frustrating that if I throw my remote through my TV, you're buying me a new TV for not having fixed a known issue!

I have a cloud-based DVR box. The new one without a clock. Here's the problem.

Like many people, I record sports games and start to watch them about an hour after they start. This way I can skip the commercials. I used to do this with the hard disk DVR without a problem. But with the cloud, the timeline will jump back to the beginning, then sometimes, jump to the live recording - which is extra infuriating since I don't want to know the score. I have to either fast forward or reverse to find where I was before I began fastfowarding.

The jump to zero on the timeline happens in various ways. Sometimes, I hit fast forward and it shows as zero already. Sometimes, it fast forwards for a bit, then jumps to zero. Sometimes the jump to zero and then to live is so quick, I have no idea where it is.

For those, like me, who are searching for this issue, know that you're not crazy and it's not you. I'm creating this new thread so there's a new time stamp to know that on Oct 30, 2025 this is still a problem. An extremely annoying problem.

Please, Cox, fix this!

Hi RSMellette. I am sorry that this is happening. I would like to know if this just happens on sport program recordings or does this happen on any recording. This information will help. Thanks, Lisa, Cox Support Forums Moderator

It happens when you're watching a show while it's still being recorded. I only do this with sports shows. I have not seen it happen with shows that have completed recording.

I can't help you with the issue you're experiencing, but I can offer a possible workaround.  Cox TV buffers an hour for all recently selected channels up to the number of available channels that may be recorded simultaneously.   I'm not sure how long Contour buffers selected channels or if Cloud DVR buffers at all.  But if it does, you could try using the live channel buffer, provided you begin watching before the maximum buffer time is reached.  Mute the TV, select the channel being recorded while avoiding looking at the screen and reverse to the start of the buffer.   It's not a perfect solution, but it might allow you to avoid the disruptions and spoilers you're experiencing now.  If you have to pause watching for longer than the time left in the buffer, you'll have to wait until recording stops, to avoid missing part of the game, and watch your recorded playback, which should work then.
