So, are you saying that the Cox battery backup units are for telephony services that do not involve modem provided voip?  If I get power battery backup units (not Cox units) for the modem and telephone equipment that will suffice to maintain telephone service in a power outage?

Hi HalVegas, assuming the Cox equipment that provides the network signal to your home was unimpacted, there are two things required for your home phone line to work: the digital telephone modem must be connected to both an active coax cable outlet and a source of power like an external battery backup. Does this help?

So, as I understand it, assuming that the Cox provider is still providing an active coax cable (by not being impacted by the power outage or have their backup units working), battery backup units powering the equipment (modem, phones, etc.) will keep the phone working.
