I understand you're concerned about a sudden increase in your data usage, especially since your usage habits haven't changed significantly, and you've already taken steps like changing your password and modems. I can help provide some information regarding data usage and tools to monitor it.
Data usage reflects the amount of data used by online activities, not the amount of time spent online. While you mentioned using only two Rokus, streaming video typically accounts for the highest data usage. Even streaming in 1080p can consume a significant amount of data; an average HD movie uses about 3 GB per hour.
Here are some things to consider and tools you can use to investigate further:
> Streaming Video Settings:** Customers can change their default streaming settings to Standard Definition to reduce data usage.
> Exiting Streaming Apps:** To ensure data isn't being used when the TV is off, always exit content and stop any streaming apps before turning off the TV. Even if you're not actively watching, the device could still be streaming.
> Security Cameras:** If you have any security cameras, they can use a lot of data, especially if they default to the highest resolution. Lowering these settings can help save usage while retaining clear video.
> Smartphone Backup:** Many smartphones automatically back up photos and videos when connected to Wi-Fi. You might consider adjusting image quality settings to use less data or monitoring usage after events like vacations.
> Guests/Visitors:** If you've had any guests, their devices also use data.
> WiFi Password:** Ensure a strong password is set up on your in-home WiFi network to prevent others from using your Internet service. If you're sharing your WiFi, changing the password is recommended.
You can monitor your current and historical data usage using the following methods:
Cox Website:
> Go to My Account, enter your User ID and Password, and then click Sign In.
> From the My Account home page, scroll down to the "Manage your service & equipment" section and click "Internet".
> From the "Helpful Tools" section, click "Data Usage Meter". You can also access it directly at www.cox.com/internet/mydatausage.cox.
> Review your data usage. Data usage displays in blue, and any overages display in red. You can view usage by month, current daily, and past daily.
> To see a breakdown of how your household uses data, click the "View Usage Activity" button on the Data Usage Meter page. This tool provides a high-level, breakdown of activities contributing to data usage.
* **Cox App:**
> Launch the Cox app and sign in with your primary User ID and Password.
> From the Home screen in the Internet section, tap "Data Usage Details".
> The "Current" tab displays current usage information. To see a history of usage for the prior three cycles, tap the "History" tab.
> To view further information regarding which activities are using the most data, from the "Current" tab, click "View Your Data Activities". In the "Usage by Category" section, you can scroll through the list to view the percentage of data used for each activity
For more tips and tools to help manage data usage, you can visit www.cox.com/datausage or download the Cox app, or email us your “full” name, “complete” address, and a copy of your post to Cox.Help@cox.com for further assistance. Thank you!
