Windows Outlook 2003 Thousands of emails after infection

Windows 7 64 bit OS on a COX Business account.

Reinstalled Outlook and transfered old files with no problem.

Checked all files with Norton 360, MalwarebBytes & a few other programs....clean.

When connected to COX server it is downloading 10's of thousands of files.

Running all night the current message is saying it will take 146 hours to receive the mail. Currently up to 39000+ email listed in the inbox.

Spoke with support @ 10000 emails and she said the virus probably turned the computer into a BOT and sent out emails to

test if address were active.  Now getting return messages of inactive email addresses?

WHAT TO DO NEXT to get this email account back on line?

PS: WebMail does work but missing address book, old emails, etc.

If your PC or email accout was compromised and sending spam emails it may take up to 4 days for any undeliverable bounce replies to all come back before they stop coming in.

Thank you Chris for your quick reply and comprehensive answer.  This must drive your staff, and servers, nuts with all this wasted bandwidth and lost productivity.

With Norton 360 and Scunia PSI 3.0 to keep programs up to date as well as Microsoft Update & CCleaner,  what else can be done to prevent these hacks?

I am a volunteer IT for a non-profit supporting 25+ stand alone computers.

Many thanks,

Ramsey
