Why do I have to delete same msg on both iPad AND iPhone ?

I am using an iPad & an iPhone. I get the same message on both devices. When I delete a message on my iPad I then have to go to iPhone and delete the same message AGAIN! Why can't I just delete a message on either device without having to delete it again on the other device? It works this way with Yahoo & Gmail.
