Viewing pictures sent as an attachment - looking for a way to associate a program to open them

Is there a way to have a picture viewer open pictures that are sent as an attachment.  Right now if I try to open large picture attachments it takes forever to load them then they are shown HUGE.  I know I can save to my drive and then use program of my choice, but I don't always want to have to save these pictures.  So, is there someway to have it open a real picture viewer when I click on a picture attachment?
