Recording on Whole Home DVR when both tuners are scheduled to be recording live broadcasts
When viewing a live broadcast five minutes before the DVR recognizes that both tuners are scheduled to be recording, the viewer is presented with a screen that allows them to cancel one recording so they can continue viewing the live broadcast. If the viewer exits without cancelling either scheduled recording then presses the RECORD button they are presented with the option of cancelling either scheduled recording or pressing the B button to select a different DVR for recording the current live broadcast. If B is pressed all DVRs are shown starting with the DVR they are watching, which obviously is not a valid selection. They must manually go thru the scheduled recordings by DVR to find a DVR that is not scheduled to record on both tuners but there is no information on which tuners are being used to view live broadcasts.
Suggestion 1: In the case above, only show DVRs with free tuners in the B button DVR selection. That is exclude from the list any DVRs with both turners that are currently displaying , recording, or scheduled to begin recording live broadcasts.
Suggestion 2: There is a more convenient solution for the viewer but more difficult to program. Change the five minute warning display if there is DVR on the network with a free tuner (i.e., not currently displaying, recording, or scheduled to begin recording a live broadcast). Add a button option to the five minute warning display which when pressed will: a) Begin recording the current live broadcast to any DVR with a free tuner b) Switch to the current live broadcast now being recorded on the DVR from "a".
Suggestion 3: When scheduling a future program and it is detected that both of the DVRs tuners will be recording concurrently, add the option to record the program to any DVR which will have two free tuners during the concurrent recordings. Also in this case there is a B button DVR selection option. As in suggestion "1" only show DVRs with free tuners in the B button DVR selection. That is exclude from the list any DVRs with both turners that are scheduled to be recording live broadcasts.
Suggesting 4: Provide a new Home Network DVR display page. On the page for each visible DVR show if each tuner is being used to view a live broadcast, recording a live broadcast, scheduled to begin a recording, or free. Also show the next scheduled recording for each tuner.
Cox's first generation home DVR network places the recording load balancing on the viewer because the network is designed as a network of DVRs and Client boxes. Hopefully, the second generation will be designed as a network of viewing devices, tuners, hard drives, and a recording schedule, with load balancing a network function.
